I’ve Been Casted…
Thursday, March 26th, 2009 | General
Yesterday Jaime drove me to the hospital for my appointment where I got my staples removed, and a qiggly cast put on.
So after sitting a while in the waiting room they called us in. We happened to get paired up with the same male nurse who put my temporary splint on right after the accident. He took us back to one of the rooms and took of the splint.
My whole foot and ankle was rather swollen from all the recent crutching. I was expecting to see my foot in better shape after letting it recover for a week straight. They cleaned off my leg with what smelled like pure alcohol and then prepped me for staple removal.

It was slightly painful to have the staples removed. The nurse was quick and before I knew it we were done. They cleaned the area again and began covering the cut with special cotton and then wrapped the entire foot with about two layers of another type of cotton. After that the male nurse had me hang my foot of the edge of the bed where he put a little metal plate under my big toe to support my foot while he wrapped it. He dampened some plaster and went to work.
Right before it was to hard to mold anymore he cranked my ankle to the inside. “This…” he explained “is how you create a qiggly cast. It’s usually done when the inner ligament of the ankle is damaged”. Oh boy did that hurt like hell… I just started laughing in an attempt to deal with it. I do remember my doctor mentioning that I did damage my inner ankle ligament and that it would need a qiggly cast. He forgot to mention the pain involved.
The nurse then wrapped a few layers of clear plastic before a few layers of red plastic was applied.
All in all my foot does feel much better in this cast. Especially with the staples removed…
