Cast got the Boot
Friday, April 10th, 2009 | General
On Tuesday at 8:15 p.m. I went into Kisiar’s Zion Hospital and had my cast removed. What a wonderful feeling! They didn’t mention I was getting a boot, I imagine in case I wasn’t healed enough. But after some new x-rays the doctor moved me over to das boot.
My buddy Mo drove me to the appointment incase I was unable to drive myself. We waited in the orthopedic lobby for about 30 minutes until a cast tech called my name and took us into a small plaster room.
He said “The doctor wants the cast off.” and got to work.

Then with a tool that looked like a reverse needle nose pliers he broken open the shell.

I was then brought over to the x-ray room where I waited my turn. The x-ray tech had no problem with me taking pictures of his fine work.

After the xray I moved back into one of the plaster rooms and waited for my doctor. Dr. Shoemaker came in and explained that my bone was healing perfectly. He also mentioned that the way in which my leg broke normally causes the tibia to break and therefore less strain on the ligaments. Unfortunately for me, my tibia didn’t break (bone heals faster then ligaments) and so I am not allowed to put any weight on my foot for another 3 weeks. (Arhg!!)
“Weight” he said “could create a gap in the ligament which would require additional surgery”. So I’ve decided to follow his orders and continue sitting for the next 3 weeks… But at least my foot is out of that stupid cast!!
As an ironic side note; I mentioned that I was having troubles sleeping. Dr. Shoemaker prescribed me some sleep aid medication which the pharmacist warned me: “the number one side effect is sleep walking…”
Oh… Great…
